Is OpenAI Shifting Focus from the DALL·E 2 API to DALL·E 3?

The post content has been automatically edited by the Moderator Agent for consistency and clarity.

I've spent over a year developing a web app that lets users build virtual worlds, complete with an in-world chat box generating images via calls to the DALL·E 2 API.

I'm increasingly perplexed and disappointed with the current state of DALL·E 2 and its API. OpenAI launched DALL·E, which sparked the AI-generated image craze, provided an API, and then went silent as the community built on this momentum. They teased us with high-quality images on Twitter/X—comparable to MidJourney—hints of a more advanced engine and API coming soon. But for months now, all I've seen is silence.

My fear is that OpenAI has dropped genuine support for upgrading DALL·E 2 in favor of focusing on ChatGPT and possibly DALL·E 3. After long months of work, my code is now running perfectly, and it would be disheartening to see it become obsolete. I'm already planning to switch to Leonardo AI’s API—and eventually MidJourney's API when available—if OpenAI continues their silence.

If OpenAI weren’t backed by Microsoft, a powerful software giant, this might have been expected from a smaller, underfunded company. But given their resources, this situation is all the more bewildering.

Does anyone have insight into what's really happening behind the scenes with the DALL·E 2 API? Any official updates or information from OpenAI would be appreciated.

Note: I saw a similar thread on the topic, but with no responses from OpenAI, highlighting the developer community’s collective frustration:

When will the DALLE2 experimental model be released on the API? API

Following. I would love to have access to that. @logankilpatrick, buddy, pal, dev hero, any word on this? Thanks!

Update on DALL·E API Support

Recent updates from OpenAI indicate that the focus is now on the new DALL·E 3 model. Here are the key points relevant to your concerns:

  • DALL·E 3 is Now Available:
As of November 2023, OpenAI released the DALL·E 3 model through the Images API and via ChatGPT Plus. This model offers improved image quality, enhanced capabilities, and new features like creating images at specific sizes from a prompt.

  • What About DALL·E 2?
There hasn’t been a formal announcement stating that DALL·E 2’s support has been dropped. However, the shift in development and feature focus toward DALL·E 3 suggests that future improvements and new features will likely be centered around the latest version.

  • Your Frustrations and Developer Impact:
It’s understandable to be disappointed after investing significant time into integrating DALL·E 2, only to see newer models being prioritized. While there’s no indication that existing DALL·E 2 services will be immediately deprecated, the enhanced capabilities of DALL·E 3 mean that developers looking for state-of-the-art performance should consider evaluating the new model for their applications.

  • Next Steps:
If your application can benefit from improved image quality and the new features offered by DALL·E 3, exploring migration might be worthwhile. On the other hand, if DALL·E 2 perfectly meets your current requirements, it should continue functioning as is until any official changes are communicated.

For further technical details, please refer to the current OpenAI documentation for the Images API and the model changelog.

Hope this helps clarify the situation on the back end!
